I have just attended a seminar 'The Royal British Legion 90 years - the way
forward'

I am just trying to gauge a few things.

1) Are you a member of the RBL?
2) If not why not?
3) Would you pay £20 a year to be a member?

It seems that after years of old men in charge, and upto 80 clubs a year
going to the wall the Legion finds it needs to change.

Sounds as if the RBL are reaching the same conclusion as the Royal Canadian
Legion, only some years later.

I wonder if your poll will produce very different results from what we have
observed here. I did not renew my membership in the RCL because my branch
was full of bigots who seemed overly concerned with immigration and, when
polled, I told the leadership as much. My father left over similar issues,
mostly concerned with class bigotry.

Andrew you are so right. One issue raised was that up to 80 clubs a year
are closing, someone said that without the clubs the legion would die!, It
was then explained that currently there are over 6000 branchs but only 600
clubs. the argument went that without clubs there would be comaradeship - I
then piped up and said "what about the local pub?" The main point on this
was raised that the image of the legion to people is a club for old men.
I'm hoping that in my branch at least we will raise awareness that the
legion is the foremost charity for ex service personnal.

I have great respect for the RBL as a charity for ex Servicemen - excellent.
However, I wouldn't be seen dead in my local Club. Was once told by a
confirmed civvy member that the club had nothing to do with ex Servicemen or
women - and he was convinced he was right, until picturised in a Naval
manner :-)
